Château Calon-Ségur was classified as one of 14 third growths in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and it is the most northerly of all the Médoc Grand-Crus Classés. The 2018 grand vin is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in new French oak. It reveals a remarkable nose of blackcurrants, crème de cassis, tobacco, baking spices, chocolate and cedarwood. The palate is full-bodied, rich and multi-dimensional, with moreish tannins and a long finish.
97 The Wine Independent
The 2018 Calon Segur is deep garnet-purple in color. It has a powerful nose of crème de cassis, boysenberry preserves, and mocha, with an undercurrent of cedar, tar, and star anise. Full-bodied, rich and decadent it the mouth, it has a solid frame of ripe, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy. Needs five more years, at least, but is shping up to be a real head-turner.Lisa Perrotti-Brown9th February 2023

92 Vinous
The 2018 Calon-Ségur has a classic Saint-Estèphe nose. Rather obdurate at first, it takes time to coalesce, revealing black fruit, charcoal and warm gravel scents, well defined but distant and not predisposed to charm the imbiber. In a funny way, I quite like that stubbornness. The palate is well balanced with firm tannins and fine acidity. Maybe this feels a little pinched compared to recent vintages; it does not possess the amplitude of the 2016 and 2017 and it is rather serious on the brine-infused finish. This is a fine and very typical Calon-Ségur, though it is not the most finessed in recent years.Neal Martin1st March 2021
