Ca` Marcanda Gaja 2016 is a Bolgheri Rosso blend featuring 40% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. This wine reflects the diverse terroir of the Bolgheri region, characterised by its sandy and clay-rich soils, which influence the wine`s structure and profile. The 2016 vintage displays a firm structure, with pronounced tannins that gradually soften with time. The palate is marked by flavours of dark fruit, herbs and subtle spice. Founded by Angelo Gaja, the estate focuses on integrating modern techniques while respecting traditional methods, enhancing the expression of its renowned vineyards.

The 2016 Camarcanda is pretty, open-knit and gracious in its bouquet, although there is a good bit of Cabernet tannin underpinning the dark fruit. Hints of chocolate, mint, sage, tobacco, licorice and blackberry develop in the glass. The 2016 needs a few years to soften, but it is undeniably attractive and inviting. It's hard to say if it is the vintage, or if the style here has moved towards a bit more freshness as it has at Gaja in Piedmont, but the 2016 Camarcanda does seem to have an extra kick of vibrancy over some previous editions. I can't wait to taste it with some bottle age. Antonio Galloni1st March 2020

80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc.Deepish crimson. Pure, intense Cabernet aroma of lively cassis fruit and just a touch of dark-red fruit to lift the aroma. Intense, chewy, deep and yet so smooth. The tannins are super-polished so that although the fruit is only just starting to lose its primary dimension, the tannins make it already approachable. Darker and more savoury on the palate. Elegant and long. (JH)

From Turin to Tuscany

The Gaja Winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. One of Italy’s most renowned and dynamic wineries, Gaja first established its world-class reputation with the powerful reds it produced in the region of Piemonte in Northwestern Italy.

A key figure was Angelo Gaja, who took over the running of the estate in 1970 and sought to showcase the best that the Nebbiolo grape could produce with stellar Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate produces unique white wines too, such as the marvellous single varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Alteni di Brassica.

Gaja is also a leading name in Tuscany, having diversified into the production of Brunello and Super Tuscan wines. The Gaja family have owned the Pieve Santa Restituta estate since 1994 from which they produce two single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino wines, Rennina and Sugarille. In 1996, Angelo Gaja purchased the Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri.
