Bunnahabhain 40 Year Old Malts of Scotland is an Islay single malt distilled in 1970 and bottled in 2011 from Sherry hogshead number 4016. This release includes a 5cl miniature and was bottled at a natural cask strength of 41.1%. It represents the traditional production methods of the 1970s, resulting in a spirit that emphasises dried fruits and spice rather than maritime peat. The liquid shows a deep amber hue and offers a profile of demerara sugar, leather and black tea. On the palate, it delivers notes of tobacco leaf and unsweetened cocoa, with the oak providing structure without becoming astringent. The finish is sustained and earthy, with a distinctive salt-caramel note that persists.

The Lighter Side of Islay

Often known as the "gateway malt" for those looking to explore the smoky malts of Islay, Bunnahabhain is more lightly peated than most other whiskies produced on the island. Situated on the north-eastern coast, the distillery name means "mouth of the river" in Gaelic.

Historically noted for a waxy, oily mouthfeel, low peat levels and a hint of sea spray, Bunnahabhain have since experimented with more heavily peated drams, in-keeping with the style of their island neighbours. The youngest age statement in the core range is 12 years old while limited edition cask finishes have won the distillery awards globally.
