Brunello di Montalcino Soldera 1990 stands as a notable release from the renowned Casse Basse estate, crafted by Gianfranco Soldera, known for his commitment to traditional viticulture. This vintage is produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes, showcasing a rich tapestry of flavours including dried cherries, underlined by nuances of licorice and balsamic characteristics. The wine offers a structured palate, revealing layers that develop over time. While the vintage is celebrated for its ageing potential, it remains a study in the meticulous approach that defines the Soldera legacy within the Montalcino region.

- I have had the opportunity to taste both of Soldera’s 1990 Brunellos side by side a few times. That's about as good as it gets when it comes to vinous experiences. The 1990 Brunello di Montalcino is an elegant, deep wine with endowed with striking energy to play off the natural textural richness that is such a signature for this historic Tuscan vintage. Bright red cherry, white pepper, rose petals and mint all build in the glass. The wine’s freshness especially blows me away. This was the first Brunello made from the Case Basse vineyard. Previously, all the Soldera Brunellos were made from the Intistieti vineyard, including the fabled 1990 Riserva.

Visionary Brunello with natural purity

The late Gianfranco Soldera was a visionary producer of some the purest and most ethereal expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. A former insurance broker, Soldera purchased his Case Basse estate in 1972. Until his death in 2019 at the age of 82, he was a zealous guardian of its unique terroir and the wines it produced.

With his botanist wife, Graziella, Soldera created Case Basse as an extraordinary ecosystem, including a two-hectare botanical park with more than 1,500 unique rose varieties, and a habitat for insect species that predate on vine parasites – thus allowing Soldera to forgo pesticides in his vineyards.

Beyond terroir, Soldera believed that the most important element for creating truly great wines was time. In practice, this meant slow fermentations (for a month or more), solely of free-run juice only, in large old slavonian oak vats without temperature control, followed by extended maturation in the same vessels – lasting up to six years for the flagship riserva bottlings.

With their trademark structure, hedonistic richness and beguiling aromatics, the wines of Soldera are unmistakeable. To have the opportunity to taste one at the peak of its maturity (such as the exquisite 1990), is a rare pleasure.
