Tenuta Il Poggione is a Montalcino estate with a long history and is a benchmark for traditionally made Brunello. Vigna Paganelli is only produced in the best vintages from a single vineyard of the oldest vines and the 2012 is invitingly rich and bold with abundant black cherry fruit and spice and sumptuous, mouthfilling texture.

Deep red. Sweet spices, ripe red cherry and licorice on the broad nose. Rich, ripe and suave, showing insidious sweetness to the red cherry and herbal flavors, this big wine is balanced enough to hide its 15% alcohol very well. Less graceful than the 2013 Brunello from Il Poggione, but that has mostly to do with the hotter 2012 vintage.Ian d'Agata1st April 2018

Il Poggione

An Historic Tuscan Estate

Il Poggione’s stellar reputation for producing fine, long-aged Brunellos is down to the skilled and highly experienced winemakers who have managed the winery cellars: Pierluigi Talenti from 1958 until his death in 1999, ably followed by Fabrizio Bindocci (also the president of the wine consortium Brunello di Montalcino DOCG) and, from 2005, Fabrizio’s son Alessandro.

In the cellar, traditional winemaking prevails, with the use of a submerged cap (the grape solids which rise to the surface of the vats during fermentation) and frequent pumpovers preferred to maximise extraction and ageing conducted in large French oak casks. The standard Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is matured in cask for three years before a further period of bottle age before release. The estate’s Riserva bottling, which is only made in exceptionally good vintages, spends an additional year in cask.
