Soldera Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2002 is a full-bodied Sangiovese red wine from the Montalcino sub-region of Tuscany, central Italy. Soldera was founded by Gianfranco and Graziella Soldera in 1970 and quickly established a reputation for producing some of the most highly sought-after Brunellos which highlight the terroir of their Case Basse property`s Sangiovese vineyards. On the 2002. "The 2002 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is simply awesome. A deep yet translucent red, the wine explodes from the glass with a muscular, structured core of fruit that totally saturates the palate. The depth and richness of the fruit is simply breathtaking for its detail, clarity and inner perfume. Today the tannins are rather imposing, so extended cellaring seems wise. Despite the reputation of the vintage, there is not a hint of greenness or unripe tannin here, just a firm, classic Brunello that will thrill those who appreciate traditionally made wines. In 2002 Gianfranco Soldera crafted one of exactly three Italian reds that are profound; the others are Giacomo Conterno`s Barolo Monfortino and Miani`s Merlot." Wine Advocate, 2010

The 2002 Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous, understated beauty in a very challenging year that generally produced most wines. Not here. Soldera’s 2002 caresses the palate with floral and spice overtones, along with the inner sweetness that is typical of vintages with a late harvest. Silky tannins pull it all together on the close. I have had slightly more profound bottles than this, but the 2002 remains a triumph given the cool, rainy weather that marked most of the summer. Antonio Galloni27th June 2024

Soldera Case Basse

Visionary Brunello with natural purity

The late Gianfranco Soldera was a visionary producer of some the purest and most ethereal expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. A former insurance broker, Soldera purchased his Case Basse estate in 1972. Until his death in 2019 at the age of 82, he was a zealous guardian of its unique terroir and the wines it produced.

With his botanist wife, Graziella, Soldera created Case Basse as an extraordinary ecosystem, including a two-hectare botanical park with more than 1,500 unique rose varieties, and a habitat for insect species that predate on vine parasites – thus allowing Soldera to forgo pesticides in his vineyards.

Beyond terroir, Soldera believed that the most important element for creating truly great wines was time. In practice, this meant slow fermentations (for a month or more), solely of free-run juice only, in large old slavonian oak vats without temperature control, followed by extended maturation in the same vessels – lasting up to six years for the flagship riserva bottlings.

With their trademark structure, hedonistic richness and beguiling aromatics, the wines of Soldera are unmistakeable. To have the opportunity to taste one at the peak of its maturity (such as the exquisite 1990), is a rare pleasure.
