Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio di Sotto 2006 is a red wine from Tuscany, Italy, crafted from Sangiovese grapes sourced from the Castelnuovo dell’Abate vineyards. This vintage represents the last Riserva produced by the original owner, Piero Palmucci, before the estate transitioned to the Colle Massari group. The wine underwent fermentation in wooden vats using native yeasts and was aged for 60 months in large Slavonian oak casks. It exhibits a translucent ruby hue and offers an aromatic profile of wild strawberries, dried herbs, and sandalwood, reflecting the vineyard`s high-altitude conditions, while maintaining an alcohol content of 14%.

Medium red. Soil-inflected aromas of cherry, minerals, dried flowers and blood orange; an essence of sangiovese. Silky-sweet, plush and seamless, with pungent red cherry and strawberry fruit showing an almost liqueur-like sweetness without any impression of heaviness. Most impressive on the rising whiplash of a finish, which features sweet tannins, firm acidity and terrific lingering perfume. Not at all a powerhouse but this edge-free, rather Burgundian Brunello nevertheless stains the palate. I found this beauty hard to spit.Stephen Tanzer1st July 2012
