Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gli Angeli La Gerla 2019 is a single-vineyard Sangiovese Grosso from Montalcino, Tuscany. Sourced from the Gli Angeli vineyard, situated at 270-320 metres above sea level, this wine features a nuanced profile of red and dark fruits, including cherry and plum, alongside notes of tobacco and leather. The palate reveals full-bodied structure with persistent tannins and balanced acidity. La Gerla, recognised for its commitment to traditional vinification techniques, was established in 1977 and continues to reflect the character of its terroir.

The La Gerla 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli is a dark and concentrated wine with thick layers of rich fruit and a good dose of spicy toasted oak at the back. Those oak tones come across with dustings of cinnamon and nutmeg, although we can expect these to integrate as this full-bodied wine evolves over time. It needs more time in the bottle.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gli Angeli opens with a mentholated freshness. Pine shavings and savory herbs make way for mint-laced blackberries. It's surprisingly juicy and vibrant, with lifted textures and wild berry fruits accelerated by vibrant acidity. Hints of cedary spice combine with a saturation of fine tannins as the 2019 finishes with staining length yet still quite fresh. Very nice.

Mid to deep ruby. Rich, dark cherry nose with touches of vanilla. Juicy cherry fruit with underlying chewy tannins. Long and succulent and ready now, but with real bite on the finish. (WS)

A Bright Star in Montalcino

Founded by the late Sergio Rossi in 1976, La Gerla is one of the leading estates in Montalcino, Tuscany. Originally named Colombaio, the estate was previously owned by the Biondi-Santi family. The main vineyards of this beautiful estate are located at the foot of the Montalcino hill in Canalicchio, at 320m above sea level. During his time in charge, Rossi extended the vineyard holdings by purchasing 5ha of vines in Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The estate is now run by vineyard manager Alberto Passeri and winemaker Vittorio Fiore.

La Gerla produces five wines, all made from massal-selected Sangiovese Grosso grapes: Poggio Gli Angeli is produced from young vines in Castelnuovo and matured for four months in Slavonian oak botti; Rosso di Montalcino spends two years in cask, one of which is in Slavonian oak; Birba is a declassified Brunello di Montalcino which spends one year in barrique and a year in Slavonian oak; Brunello is a blend of Sangiovese grapes from Canalicchio and Castelnuovo, aged for three years in cask and one year on bottle; and finally Brunello gli Angeli is a riserva made in exceptional vintages from 1ha of old vines. This long-lived wine is matured for four years in Slavonian oak and a further year in bottle before release.
