This single-vineyard cru is La Gerla`s flagship wine, made only in select years. The 2015 vintage is one of the finest of the decade. Notes of new leather, forest floor and ripe woodland berries aromas on the nose along with scents of violets and tobacco. Full-bodied and firmly structured, the palate offers finesse and concentrated flavours including crushed raspberries, Morello cherries, liquorice and truffles, framed in polished tannins. Drink now through to 2030.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gli Angeli is drop-dead gorgeous, as it keeps you coming back to the glass over and over to take in its alluring display of rich dark fruits with sweet mint, mulling spice and a grounding hint of flowery undergrowth. Its textures are seamless, coasting across a core of vibrant acids, which enliven its flavors of black cherry and currants. You can almost forget how youthful the 2015 is today, as it comes across as juicy at times. That said, there’s plenty of structure here to carry it for many years in the cellar. Notes of licorice, tobacco and sweet herbs linger long over a gentle coating of fine tannin. This may be dangerously delicious today; yet after just a few years of cellaring, I expect the Riserva Gli Angeli to fully blossom and provide a long and open drinking window. A Bright Star in Montalcino

Founded by the late Sergio Rossi in 1976, La Gerla is one of the leading estates in Montalcino, Tuscany. Originally named Colombaio, the estate was previously owned by the Biondi-Santi family. The main vineyards of this beautiful estate are located at the foot of the Montalcino hill in Canalicchio, at 320m above sea level. During his time in charge, Rossi extended the vineyard holdings by purchasing 5ha of vines in Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The estate is now run by vineyard manager Alberto Passeri and winemaker Vittorio Fiore.

La Gerla produces five wines, all made from massal-selected Sangiovese Grosso grapes: Poggio Gli Angeli is produced from young vines in Castelnuovo and matured for four months in Slavonian oak botti; Rosso di Montalcino spends two years in cask, one of which is in Slavonian oak; Birba is a declassified Brunello di Montalcino which spends one year in barrique and a year in Slavonian oak; Brunello is a blend of Sangiovese grapes from Canalicchio and Castelnuovo, aged for three years in cask and one year on bottle; and finally Brunello gli Angeli is a riserva made in exceptional vintages from 1ha of old vines. This long-lived wine is matured for four years in Slavonian oak and a further year in bottle before release.
