La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino gli Angeli Riserva 2018 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard Sangiovese red wine from the Montalcino sub-region of Tuscany, central Italy. The grapes for the La Glera gli Angeli Riserva are sourced from the best parcels of the esteemed Vigna Gli Angeli – meaning "Vineyard of the Angels” – which was planted in 1985 and remains the estate`s oldest vineyard. "A saturated red colour, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva Gli Angeli takes on a supple and ripe profile with aromas of cherry pie, baking spices, sweet cedar, and crushed flowers. Medium to full-bodied, this continues to the palate with supple tannins, a delicately rounded mouthfeel, and a clean, lifted finish. It’s a very attractive wine now and should have an open window for drinking over the next 8-10 years, but it doesn`t feel structured enough for the cellar much longer than that." Jeb Dunnuck

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gli Angeli is dark and rich with a bouquet of plum sauce, Baker's chocolate and sweet sage. This is seamlessly silky in feel with a plush wave of ripe red and darker black fruits that swirl over a core of saline minerals and exotic spice. Hints of spiced orange add a pleasant tension as a bitter bite of tannins resonates. The 2018 tapers off long yet only lightly structured.

A Bright Star in Montalcino

Founded by the late Sergio Rossi in 1976, La Gerla is one of the leading estates in Montalcino, Tuscany. Originally named Colombaio, the estate was previously owned by the Biondi-Santi family. The main vineyards of this beautiful estate are located at the foot of the Montalcino hill in Canalicchio, at 320m above sea level. During his time in charge, Rossi extended the vineyard holdings by purchasing 5ha of vines in Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The estate is now run by vineyard manager Alberto Passeri and winemaker Vittorio Fiore.

La Gerla produces five wines, all made from massal-selected Sangiovese Grosso grapes: Poggio Gli Angeli is produced from young vines in Castelnuovo and matured for four months in Slavonian oak botti; Rosso di Montalcino spends two years in cask, one of which is in Slavonian oak; Birba is a declassified Brunello di Montalcino which spends one year in barrique and a year in Slavonian oak; Brunello is a blend of Sangiovese grapes from Canalicchio and Castelnuovo, aged for three years in cask and one year on bottle; and finally Brunello gli Angeli is a riserva made in exceptional vintages from 1ha of old vines. This long-lived wine is matured for four years in Slavonian oak and a further year in bottle before release.
