The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Biondi-Santi 2018 originates from a vintage characterised by warm end-of-summer winds that helped dry the grapes after summer rains. This resulted in grapes with a heightened pulp content and thinner skins. The wine is medium to full-bodied, showcasing aromas of ripe dark cherry, earthy underbrush, and subtle hints of sweet spice. Biondi-Santi, a historic producer in Montalcino, has been crafting Brunello since the late 19th century, establishing foundational practices in Sangiovese winemaking.

The Biondi-Santi 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva saw its fruit harvested after warm end-of-summer winds dried the fruit after rains. It resulted in fruit with extra pulp and thinner skins. This Riserva has a medium-plus body and delivers generous aromas of dark cherry, underbrush, potting soil and sweet spice. Its structure remains fine and the alcohol content is a very contained 13.3%. The wine is essentially elegant and fine with a slightly rounder or soft fruit profile that cedes to bright freshness and a long, polished finish.

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
