Biondi-Santi is widely considered the pinnacle of Brunello with wines known for an unbelievable capacity to age. The 2012 Riserva has a brooding, complex nose and is tightly coiled and compact on the palate. It displays fine balance overall but is perhaps a touch too young to be enjoying just yet.

We had a backup, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. This is still relatively youthful, a potent bouquet with Morello cherries, Clementines and cloves, developing more tertiary, almost leathery scents with aeration. The palate is well-balanced, with a keen line of acidity and a gentle grip in the mouth, finishing vivacious and slightly piquant. I would afford this another two or three years in bottle.Neal Martin1st September 2024

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
