Aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 3 years, this 2011 vintage from Biondi-Santi offers gorgeous fruit flavours and extreme elegance. Bright ruby red in colour, it exhibits all the charm, intensity and energy of youth with an ample, inviting bouquet. The tannic structure is beautifully backed up by a fruity core with hints of black pepper and spice.

Dark red. Musky nuances give way to brighter red fruit, licorice and herbal aromas. Rich and dense, with flavors of red cherry and minerals lifted by hints of orange peel and bergamot, not to mention noteworthy but harmonious acidity. Finishes long with youthfully chewy tannins and lingering hints of violet. This strikes me as a slightly readier to drink version of Brunello Riserva from Biondi-Santi, but as always, it improves greatly with aeration so decant at least six hours ahead for maximum enjoyment. Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
