Biondi-Santi’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva has a pronounced nose of sweet cherries and raspberries, followed by crushed mint, rose petals and a hint of graphite. The palate is focussed and at times, still restrained, with red fruits and rose petals reappearing in the mouth. It finishes on a savoury and prolonged note. Drinking well now through 2040.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is just as compelling today as it was the many times I tasted it from cask with Franco Biondi Santi prior to his passing, although it naturally has less of the immediacy it had out of oak. Layered, silky and translucent, yet with remarkable depth, the 2010 Riserva is a wine of intensity, power and the classic austerity that has been such a signature of these Brunellos for the last several decades. Readers will have to be patient. Antonio Galloni1st February 2016

Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Still closed after having been opened eight hours previously . Very tight and a little ephemeral nose. Lifted cherry stones and wet pebbles. And a little dusty. Transparent, cool and austere with very fine tannins. Not open and a little forbidding and in need of age, lots of age. (WS)

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
