The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Biondi-Santi 2006 is crafted from Sangiovese grapes, sourced from vineyards that thrive in the unique microclimate of Montalcino. Biondi-Santi, a historic producer established in 1865, is credited with creating the Brunello style. The 2006 vintage exhibits a robust structure, with prominent tannins and subtle earthy notes. This expression also showcases the age-worthiness for which Biondi-Santi is renowned, reflecting both tradition and terroir.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva comes across as a bit reticent. It reveals lovely detail and nuance, but without the firmness of many other young vintages. Today the 2006 is quite accessible. I will be surprised if it doesn't start shutting down at some point. Regardless, the 2006 appears to be built more on finesse rather than power. Freshly cut flowers, hard candy and licorice are layered into the finish. Antonio Galloni1st April 2012

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
