Biondi-Santi is widely considered the pinnacle of Brunello di Montalcino with wines known for an unbelievable capacity to age. The 1970 Riserva is open knit and deftly textured with subtle flavours of cherry, plum, anise, graphite and smoke.
89 Vinous
The 1970 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a bit more forward in its aromas than flavors. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco and licorice open up in the glass, but overall the wine is marked by slightly advanced aromatics. There is plenty of intensity and depth in the glass. All things considered, the 1970 has held up well, although the competition is stiff in this tasting. Reconditioned June 22, 2007.Antonio Galloni1st March 2015

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
