For many, Biondi-Santi is the pinnacle of Brunello di Montalcino with wines known for their classic youthful austerity but considerable capacity to age. The 1955 Riserva was produced exclusively with estate-grown grapes sourced from the oldest vines (over 25 years old). Matured in Slavonian oak barrels for 4 years, followed by long period of bottle-aging in the quiet and darkness of “La Storica”, the bottle library at Tenuta Greppo. An excellent and exceptional harvest. Deemed one of the 12 best wines of the world of the 20th century according to “The Wine Spectator”.

The 1955 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is haunting in its beauty. The tannins have now fully softened while the acidity has been tamed with age. What comes through is a sweet, perfumed, Burgundian-inflected Sangiovese. Crushed flowers, sweet tobacco, mint, dried herbs and licorice are laced into the finish. The 1955 is a wine of extraordinary purity. Naturally at 60 years of age an after two reconditionings, there is likely to be some degree of bottle variation, but the 1955 remains unforgettable. This bottle was reconditioned and recorked twice; May 5, 1978 and June 3, 2000.Antonio Galloni1st March 2015

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
