Founded in 2006 by Marilisa Allegrini, the San Polo winery is certainly on the up and is now regularly producing exceptionally high-quality wines to rival the very best Brunello di Montalcino. Podernovi is one of two single-vineyard releases and comes from a 3-hectare south-east facing plot that sits at 450m above sea level. Grapes were hand-harvested, rigorously sorted and fermented in Slavonian oak vats, followed by 30 months maturation in 40hl casks and 6 months in bottle before release.

From the sensational 2015 vintage, this is an exceptional release of impressive density, complexity and texture. Full-bodied, rich and subtly powerful, this will age wonderfully well for at least 10-15 years.

The Poggio San Polo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi offers great density and textural richness. I would say that this wine is most characterized by the quality of the mouthfeel that wraps smoothly and thickly over the palate. Dark cherry, tobacco, earth, plum and dark fruit add intensity and flavorful substance. The wine`s full-bodied approach would match grilled meats or roasts.

Full ruby-red. Deep aromas of medicinal dark fruits are lifted by a lovely violet topnote. Full, rich and ripe, with seamless red cherry, blueberry and mineral flavors give a firm edge by a whisper of licorice and herbs. Finishes with good breadth and very fine tannins. This is excellent.
15.5 Jancis Robinson
Tasted blind. Deep ruby with orange tinges. Savoury and stalky/reductive nose. Ripe and mellow fruit that already seems a little bit developed. Firm tannins and with decent fruit length, but not the freshest of wines. Plenty to like here, even if it looks older than it is. (WS)
