Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve La Gerla 2020 is sourced from the renowned La Pieve estate. This single-vineyard wine expresses the unique terroir of its location. Aromas of dark cherries, dried herbs and earthy undertones are present on the nose. The palate reveals a balance of tart fruits, moderate tannins and hints of leather. The finish is marked by a distinct minerality and a subtle bitterness. La Pieve`s legacy in winemaking traces back to the 1970s, ensuring tradition and quality.

The La Gerla 2020 Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve is different from the village bottling, especially in terms of mouthfeel. The tannins feel a bit stronger and are on the dry side in this single-vineyard selection. However, the bouquet offers richer aromatic intensity, with black and purple fruits as the protagonists. This is a bigger wine for sure, but I would still recommend a medium-term drinking window for this vintage.
93 Vinous
The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve is youthfully coy in the glass, slowly evolving with notes of dried violets, lavender, nuances of foreign spice and black cherries. This displays sleek and racy red and blue fruits that ride a wave of brisk acidity as pretty inner florals amass toward the close. It tapers off gently tannic and with medium weight, leaving hints of licorice and tart blackberry to fade slowly.
17 Jancis Robinson
Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Firm, compact cherry nose with balsamic, savoury-spice hints. Focused pure cherry, with fresh acidity and the perfect dose of gravelly tannins. Just a suggestion of oak on the finish and skilfully done. Hedonistic. (WS)

Gerla

A Bright Star in Montalcino

Founded by the late Sergio Rossi in 1976, La Gerla is one of the leading estates in Montalcino, Tuscany. Originally named Colombaio, the estate was previously owned by the Biondi-Santi family. The main vineyards of this beautiful estate are located at the foot of the Montalcino hill in Canalicchio, at 320m above sea level. During his time in charge, Rossi extended the vineyard holdings by purchasing 5ha of vines in Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The estate is now run by vineyard manager Alberto Passeri and winemaker Vittorio Fiore.

La Gerla produces five wines, all made from massal-selected Sangiovese Grosso grapes: Poggio Gli Angeli is produced from young vines in Castelnuovo and matured for four months in Slavonian oak botti; Rosso di Montalcino spends two years in cask, one of which is in Slavonian oak; Birba is a declassified Brunello di Montalcino which spends one year in barrique and a year in Slavonian oak; Brunello is a blend of Sangiovese grapes from Canalicchio and Castelnuovo, aged for three years in cask and one year on bottle; and finally Brunello gli Angeli is a riserva made in exceptional vintages from 1ha of old vines. This long-lived wine is matured for four years in Slavonian oak and a further year in bottle before release.
