La Gerla, once a part of the Biondi Santi estate in Brunello, was acquired by former advertising executive Sergio Rossi in 1976. Just two years later, La Gerla came to life under his ownership. Today, the reins are in the hands of Sergio`s wife, Donatella, with Vittorio Fiore overseeing winemaking. La Gerla’s well-deserved reputation as one of the finest producers in the region stands as a testament to their dedication and expertise. The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is ethereal and delicate on the nose, evoking notes of violets and iris, permeated by spicy hints of cinnamon, tobacco, and leather. The palate is soft, velvety, and rich in fruit, with a long-lasting finish.
La Gerla always seem to produce pretty wines with lots of charm and accessibility, but they can be quite heavily oaked when young. This wine is no exception. This 2018 La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino has a very sweet, concentrated, dried cherry nose with a hint of desiccated coconut from some new oak perhaps. There is an attractive very ripe, almost sun-dried quality to the fruit like dried cherries or cranberries and a fragrant, wildflower note. Flavors like strawberry jam and lots of suave, creamy, oak dominate the palate, but the wine is a little light in terms of concentration in the middle. This wine has plenty of charm and appeal.Susan Hulme23rd February 2023

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is rich and hauntingly dark, with masses of cherry and raspberry sauce giving way to sweet violet florals. This coasts across the palate, with velvety textures giving way to balsamic spice, and red and black fruits lifted by cooling acidity. It leaves a staining of primary concentration offset by hints of sour citrus while finishing gently tannic and potent. There`s a lot going on here, and with the capacity to mature over the medium term.Eric Guido15th December 2022

A Bright Star in Montalcino
Founded by the late Sergio Rossi in 1976, La Gerla is one of the leading estates in Montalcino, Tuscany. Originally named Colombaio, the estate was previously owned by the Biondi-Santi family. The main vineyards of this beautiful estate are located at the foot of the Montalcino hill in Canalicchio, at 320m above sea level. During his time in charge, Rossi extended the vineyard holdings by purchasing 5ha of vines in Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The estate is now run by vineyard manager Alberto Passeri and winemaker Vittorio Fiore.
La Gerla produces five wines, all made from massal-selected Sangiovese Grosso grapes: Poggio Gli Angeli is produced from young vines in Castelnuovo and matured for four months in Slavonian oak botti; Rosso di Montalcino spends two years in cask, one of which is in Slavonian oak; Birba is a declassified Brunello di Montalcino which spends one year in barrique and a year in Slavonian oak; Brunello is a blend of Sangiovese grapes from Canalicchio and Castelnuovo, aged for three years in cask and one year on bottle; and finally Brunello gli Angeli is a riserva made in exceptional vintages from 1ha of old vines. This long-lived wine is matured for four years in Slavonian oak and a further year in bottle before release.
