Owned by Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi, Il Poggione is a winery steeped in history with its origins dating back to the late 1800s. The 2016 vintage is ruby red in colour, with a persistent nose filled with dried cherries, blackberries, almonds and cocoa. It’s a full-bodied wine with firm tannic backbone and great length. A classic from the first tilt of the glass, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino wows the senses with a pleasantly old-school bouquet of leather, earth tones, dried flowers, crushed cherries, sage and clove. This mixes radiant dark red fruits with sweet spices and salty mineral tones to create a display of contrasts, all over a silky textural wave that’s guided by vibrant acidity. Youthfully tense yet spicy with an orange flourish and amazingly fresh, the 2016 finishes with a tart tinge of youthful tension and fine-grained tannins that will require patience to resolve. This is, without a doubt, one of the vintage's top wines. The 2016 is total class.Eric Guido7th December 2023

Il Poggione

An Historic Tuscan Estate

Il Poggione’s stellar reputation for producing fine, long-aged Brunellos is down to the skilled and highly experienced winemakers who have managed the winery cellars: Pierluigi Talenti from 1958 until his death in 1999, ably followed by Fabrizio Bindocci (also the president of the wine consortium Brunello di Montalcino DOCG) and, from 2005, Fabrizio’s son Alessandro.

In the cellar, traditional winemaking prevails, with the use of a submerged cap (the grape solids which rise to the surface of the vats during fermentation) and frequent pumpovers preferred to maximise extraction and ageing conducted in large French oak casks. The standard Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is matured in cask for three years before a further period of bottle age before release. The estate’s Riserva bottling, which is only made in exceptionally good vintages, spends an additional year in cask.
