Tenuta Il Poggione is a Montalcino estate with a long history and is a benchmark for traditionally made and long-lived Brunello. 2015 is a blockbuster release that shows far greater darkness and concentration which will require a few years cellaring to unlock. Classic notes of dark cherry, tobacco, smoke and stoney minerality.
93 Vinous
Beautiful dark red color. Aromas of cinnamon, red cherry, plum, tobacco and herbs. Big and voluptuous on entry then youthfully chewy with Oriental spices, ripe red cherry and herbs. The finish is suave, long and multifaceted. Ages three years in large Slavonian oak 30-50hL casks.Ian d`Agata1st April 2020

Il Poggione

An Historic Tuscan Estate

Il Poggione’s stellar reputation for producing fine, long-aged Brunellos is down to the skilled and highly experienced winemakers who have managed the winery cellars: Pierluigi Talenti from 1958 until his death in 1999, ably followed by Fabrizio Bindocci (also the president of the wine consortium Brunello di Montalcino DOCG) and, from 2005, Fabrizio’s son Alessandro.

In the cellar, traditional winemaking prevails, with the use of a submerged cap (the grape solids which rise to the surface of the vats during fermentation) and frequent pumpovers preferred to maximise extraction and ageing conducted in large French oak casks. The standard Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is matured in cask for three years before a further period of bottle age before release. The estate’s Riserva bottling, which is only made in exceptionally good vintages, spends an additional year in cask.
