Aged for three years in large French oak casks, Brunello di Montalcino Il Poggione 2013 is an expression of Sangiovese from the Il Poggione estate, located in the southern Montalcino region. This wine, fortified at 14.5% alcohol, is sourced from old vines on the rocky slopes of Sant`Angelo in Colle, contributing to its structural integrity. The cooler growing season of 2013 has imparted clarity to its aromatic profile, revealing black cherry, leather, and tobacco. The firm mouthfeel underlines its potential for longevity, reflecting the estate’s long-standing commitment to traditional methods and high-quality vinification practices since its founding in 1890.

Dark and earth-driven, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino lifts from the glass with a rich and savory blend of ashen stones, underbrush, dried black cherries, cedar shavings and worn leather. This is surprisingly energetic and racy within, with a tart citrus flourish giving way to wild red berries and minerals, all motivated by brisk acidity. Tannins come forward through the finish, gripping the palate with youthful tension as hints of tangerine mix with a sour cranberry crunch. The 2013 is still many years away from its optimal drinking window, yet patience will be rewarded. This is simply stunning, marrying the cooler influence of the vintage with Il Poggione’s imposing and structured style. Eric Guido1st February 2024

Il Poggione

An Historic Tuscan Estate

Il Poggione’s stellar reputation for producing fine, long-aged Brunellos is down to the skilled and highly experienced winemakers who have managed the winery cellars: Pierluigi Talenti from 1958 until his death in 1999, ably followed by Fabrizio Bindocci (also the president of the wine consortium Brunello di Montalcino DOCG) and, from 2005, Fabrizio’s son Alessandro.

In the cellar, traditional winemaking prevails, with the use of a submerged cap (the grape solids which rise to the surface of the vats during fermentation) and frequent pumpovers preferred to maximise extraction and ageing conducted in large French oak casks. The standard Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is matured in cask for three years before a further period of bottle age before release. The estate’s Riserva bottling, which is only made in exceptionally good vintages, spends an additional year in cask.
