Brunello di Montalcino Il Poggione 2001 is a Sangiovese wine from the renowned Il Poggione estate in Tuscany. Exhibiting a blend of mature flavours, it reveals notes of crushed plums, ripe cherries and leather, coupled with subtle hints of earth and spice. The wine`s structure is complemented by refreshing acidity, while secondary aromas of dried herbs and tobacco develop over time. Il Poggione, one of the oldest wineries in Montalcino, has been family-owned since 1890, sourcing grapes exclusively from its own vineyards to ensure quality and authenticity.

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino shows some of its maturity with a display of crushed plums, ripe strawberries and earthy mineral tones. This gains freshness as dusty florals and autumnal spices form up in the glass. It is soft and fleshy, more high-toned and feminine than expected, with a gorgeous display of hard red candies, licorice and hints of spice combined with a pretty sweetness that keeps you coming back to the glass. This finishes wonderfully long and intense, contrasting ripeness against sour citrus and salty mineral tones. While the 2001 Il Poggione has peaked, it is holding firm with many years of life left. Il Poggione

An Historic Tuscan Estate

Il Poggione’s stellar reputation for producing fine, long-aged Brunellos is down to the skilled and highly experienced winemakers who have managed the winery cellars: Pierluigi Talenti from 1958 until his death in 1999, ably followed by Fabrizio Bindocci (also the president of the wine consortium Brunello di Montalcino DOCG) and, from 2005, Fabrizio’s son Alessandro.

In the cellar, traditional winemaking prevails, with the use of a submerged cap (the grape solids which rise to the surface of the vats during fermentation) and frequent pumpovers preferred to maximise extraction and ageing conducted in large French oak casks. The standard Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is matured in cask for three years before a further period of bottle age before release. The estate’s Riserva bottling, which is only made in exceptionally good vintages, spends an additional year in cask.
