Podere Giodo Brunello di Montalcino 2013 is a medium-to-full-bodied Sangiovese red wine from the Montalcino sub-region of Tuscany. This is the fourth release from super-consultant Carlo Ferrini’s passion project. Named for Ferrini’s parents Giovanna and Donatello (‘Gio’ and ‘Do’) the estate has 6ha of vineyards which enjoy an elevated position at up to 400m above sea level between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo. The estate Brunello is produced from low-yielding Sangiovese vines producing small, thick-skinned berries which yield extraordinarily complex, concentrated Sangiovese wines.

The bouquet of the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is just entering a more mature stage yet is still lively and fresh. Crushed strawberries and black cherries are complemented by autumnal spices and wilted violets. This soothes with its silken textures and ripe wild berry fruits. A bump of juicy acidity maintains energy and a burst of cinnamon and clove embellishes the close. Fine-grained tannins line the palate as it finishes with amazing length, leaving an earthy minerality as the only tell of its age. The 2010 possesses the balance to continue maturing for another five years and possibly more. Lovely.
