Brunello di Montalcino Cupano 2013 is a Sangiovese wine from the renowned vineyards of Montalcino. Made by a producer known for following organic and biodynamic principles, this wine is aged for over four years in small French oak barriques, which differs from the larger, traditional casks often used in the region. The 2013 vintage, overall a cooler and more elegant year for Brunello, resulted in a wine with notable freshness and energy. Expect a complex aromatic profile of red fruits, spice, leather and balsamic notes, with well-integrated oak influence presenting subtle vanilla and sweet spice. The palate exhibits fine-grained yet firm tannins, bright acidity and a balanced, smooth texture that allows it to maintain its freshness.

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is rich and opulent on the nose, with a sheen of spicy oak and dusty rose tones that give way to crushed black cherries and hints of sweet lavender. Silky and enveloping, this is deeply textural, possessing cooling acidity and waves of ripe red and blue fruits, underscored by saline minerality and spice. It tapers off dramatically long, with a tinge of sour citrus and bitter clove to balance its residual tannins. The 2013 is in fine form and still integrating in bottle. Give it a few more years of cellaring to truly reap the rewards. This biggest change in Cupano's winemaking since 2013 is the addition of tonneaux in the élevage. Eric Guido1st February 2024
