Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a 100% Sangiovese Grosso from the legendary Il Greppo vineyard. The 2020 growing season was ideal, producing wines with aromatic intensity and a supple, balanced structure. Biondi-Santi adheres to a traditional philosophy, ageing the wine for three years in large Slavonian oak barrels to ensure the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. This release displays a complex nose of dried roses, orange peel, cherry and earthy spice. The palate is refined and aristocratic, with a vibrant acidity that is the hallmark of the estate.

Silky and fine in texture, the Biondi-Santi 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is more subdued at this stage, requiring additional time to fully flesh out. With air, it gains definition and aromatic clarity, revealing floral tones of wild rose alongside light spice and a subtle mineral or graphite note on the finish. The floral dimension stands out nicely. The 2020 growing season was defined by a cold winter with snowfall on March 23 followed by timely June rainfall that supported the vegetative cycle, allowing harvest to conclude before late-September rains. Favoring finesse over power, the vintage aligns naturally with Biondi-Santi’s traditionally restrained style, shaped by an estate philosophy that prioritizes balance, transparency and longevity. Fermentation was carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the wine aged for 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks, in keeping with long-standing cellar practice.Monica Larner29th January 2026

A vibrant ruby hue, the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is perfumed and highly expressive. A candied cherry flourish on the entry meets enhancing notes of orange zest, pine shavings, dusty earth and leather. Hints of olive and a saline mineral core complicate silken textures and tart wild berry fruits on the savory palate. Showing amazing lift and finesse, the 2020 finishes only lightly structured with excellent length, leaving a resonance of licorice and plum. The purity here is fantastic. Eric Guido31st March 2026

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
