For many, Biondi-Santi is the pinnacle of Brunello di Montalcino with wines known for their classic youthful austerity but considerable capacity to age. Here is the majestic 2015 vintage where structure, elegance and freshness combine to form something special. 2015 was a hot and dry year with constant warm temperatures which permitted the grapes to reach perfect ripeness with sweet, yet fragrant aromas. The sunny character of the 2015 Brunello speaks of a warm vintage with sweet, yet fragrant fruit, with prominent notes of fresh cherries, typical of high-altitude Sangiovese. The fruit arises delicately from a bed of aromatic herbs such as thyme and rosemary with hints of liquorice root. On the palate the captivating structure reveals silky tannins and elegant freshness. The finish is long and surprisingly savoury, adding to the gastronomic personality of this Brunello.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is an understated beauty that takes some time to blossom in the glass. It’s a sweetly spiced and floral expression of the vintage, blending ripe cherries and strawberries with dusty earth, hints of sage and violets. A refreshing air of mint and lavender develops over time. It’s elegance personified on the palate, seamless and silky-smooth, with a classic and pure expression of red fruits and saline-minerals, as fine tannins slowly mount toward the close. Hints of licorice, white pepper and savory herbs linger through the lightly structured finale. While youthfully firm, the 2015 is already so enjoyable today, yet a few years of cellaring will reveal even further depths. I tasted the 2015 tasted multiple times over the course of a day and it only got better with air. Simply stunning! Eric Guido1st November 2020

Full bottle 1,405 g. A hot dry summer with harvest starting on 21 September. All grapes from their own Tenuta Greppo estate. Aged in Slavonian oak for three years. Bottled for the first time in magnums as well as 75-cl bottles.Transparent ruby – a very Sangiovese hue! Lifted, reticent nose and then the really rather glorious fruit, with the tang of Sangiovese but with a suggestion of butter toffee, spreads right across the palate. Very contained and handsome. Good energy and already rather accessible though students of the estate will presumably be confident of the wine`s ageing ability. (JR)

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
