Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino 2010 is a full-bodied Sangiovese red wine from the Montalcino sub-region of Tuscany, central Italy. Biondi-Santi is the definitive producer of Brunello di Montalcino and has remained steadfastly traditional - in terms of both its iconic label and wine style - while other Brunello producers have been carried away by passing fashions. Now in its seventh generation of winemakers, the Biondi-Santi family continues to create Sangiovese wines renowned for their elegance and longevity. Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino is traditionally fermented with indigenous yeasts in cement vats, with ageing in traditional large Slavonian oak casks. On the 2015 Brunello. "Biondi Santi’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the more controversial wines of the night. Some tasters admire the wine’s classical austerity and potential, but for others the wine is too tight to deliver real pleasure. There is little question the Biondi Santi needs time, but it is in my view impressive on this night, even if it is not as sexy as many other wines." Vinous, 2015

Intense mid ruby. Very tight and closed yet showing depth of fine-perfumed, earthy cherry. Embryonic Sangiovese palate that is Burgundian in stature and weight. Precise and perfectly balanced. Really sleek and fine and with fine powdery tannins, but not ready by far. (WS)

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
