Biondi-Santi`s Brunello di Montalcino 1997 is a notable red wine from Tuscany, Italy, crafted from Sangiovese grapes. This bottling showcases the estate`s commitment to traditional winemaking, with fruit sourced from high-altitude vineyards that benefit from cooler temperatures. The 1997 vintage saw the grapes reach a ripeness of 13.5% alcohol, while retaining refreshing acidity. After fermentation, the wine matured for three years in large oak casks, resulting in a profile of roasted plums, exotic spices, and leather. The tannic structure is riper compared to earlier releases, offering a more generous mouthfeel yet preserving the estate’s historical characteristics, indicative of the vintage’s warm climate.

Intense ruby overlaid with garnet. Very fresh aromas of ripe plum, cherry and pipe tobacco. Sweet cherry fruit emerges in the mouth, along with hints of licorice, mint, sage and white pepper. A high-toned, vibrant, elegant wine, displaying a lovely sense of balance and delineation. The texture is glossy and the tannins are full but polished. Shows no trace of heaviness or hard edges in spite of its ample structure, and closes long and sweet. A deeply satisfying Brunello from this venerable estate, and the best in many years. Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
