55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, this is a beautiful release from second growth Château Brane-Cantenac, aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (70% new). A fresh bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, gravel and cedar scents that seem to gain intensity with aeration. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, freshness and vibrancy and a lively, beautifully focused, pencil-lead-tinged finish.
92 Vinous
The 2001 Brane-Cantenac includes 12% vin de presse where the 2000 has none. The well-defined, elegant bouquet offers vivacious blackberry, raspberry and cedar aromas, accompanied by a light ferrous note. The medium-bodied palate features sappy, graphite-infused red fruit. This is fresh and crisp, but it’s not as refined as recent vintages and could come across a little rustic by comparison. Still, there is ample tension and gentle grip, and persuasive tobacco notes on the finish. 12.97% alcohol.Neal Martin1st September 2021

Chateau Brane-Cantenac

A Distinguished Second Growth

Formerly owned by the great figures of Bordeaux wine, Lucien Lurton, Château Brane-Cantenac is a highly respected Second Growth estate in Margaux. The estate has been owned and run by Lucien’s son, Henri, since 1992. Although perceived to have gone through a lull during the 1970s and 1980s, historically, Brane-Cantenac was always regarded as the a ‘Super Second’. This reputation has only been enhanced by Henri Lurton, through the implementation of better vineyard management techniques (the entire 75ha has been certified organic since 2016) and investment in cutting-edge cellar technology (for example, optical sorting machines).

The estate grows mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (slightly more Cabernet) along with a small amount of Cabernet Franc and Carmenere. The Grand Vin of Château Brane-Cantenac is noted for its ripe tannins, excellent fruit concentration and structure, and perfumed delicacy – all characteristics of the finest wines of Margaux.
