Brane Cantenac 1988 demonstrates the classic Margaux style, primarily showcasing Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The nose reveals aromas of dried fruits, earthy undertones and hints of leather, developing complexity over time. On the palate, the tannins are firm yet refined, reflecting the vintage’s maturity. The estate, established in the 18th century, is known for its meticulous vineyard practices. This vintage exemplifies the potential for longevity, offering a structured experience for discerning collectors.

The 1988 Brane-Cantenac shows very well when Henri Lurton serves it blind over lunch. This is superior to the one included in the vertical four years earlier. Displaying more fruit than before, it has a lovely bouquet with red plummy fruit, leather, graphite and an underlying herbaceousness that indicates the cooler growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rigid tannins, yet it has the transparency that the best 1988s evoke, with hints of pepper towards the finish. Drinking perfectly now.

Chateau Brane-Cantenac

A Distinguished Second Growth

Formerly owned by the great figures of Bordeaux wine, Lucien Lurton, Château Brane-Cantenac is a highly respected Second Growth estate in Margaux. The estate has been owned and run by Lucien’s son, Henri, since 1992. Although perceived to have gone through a lull during the 1970s and 1980s, historically, Brane-Cantenac was always regarded as the a ‘Super Second’. This reputation has only been enhanced by Henri Lurton, through the implementation of better vineyard management techniques (the entire 75ha has been certified organic since 2016) and investment in cutting-edge cellar technology (for example, optical sorting machines).

The estate grows mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (slightly more Cabernet) along with a small amount of Cabernet Franc and Carmenere. The Grand Vin of Château Brane-Cantenac is noted for its ripe tannins, excellent fruit concentration and structure, and perfumed delicacy – all characteristics of the finest wines of Margaux.
