The wines of Château Branaire-Ducru tend to be pure in terms of their fruit and have the structure and integration to allow long aging. The 2018 is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. It feels a little subdued at first, but it is already showing a firm tannic structure, with lovely notes of raspberries, blackberries and blackcurrants, along with hawthorn, brambles and a sprinkle of black pepper. Still very young but a very promising wine.

Vinous
The 2018 Branaire-Ducru was picked from September 19 until October 10 at 53hl/ha and is currently being aged in 60% new oak. It has retained the sophisticated bouquet that I found last year, featuring beautifully defined blackberry and cedar and hints of iris flower and rose petals. The palate is well defined with good density and backbone, something that you could argue was missing from Branaire-Ducru in the 1990s and early 2000s. It gently fans out on the finish but never wants to create too much of a commotion – that’s not its style. This indicates a property that is finding a new lease on life. Excellent. Elegant, Complex and Balance
Founded in 1680 by Jean-Baptiste Braneyre, 4ème Cru Classé estate Château Branaire Ducru currently spans 60ha and is situated on the opposite side of the road from Château Beychevelle in the south of the St-Julien appellation. Renowned for producing pure and classic St-Julien, which is elegant, supple and well-balanced.
The estate is planted with predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, together with smaller amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and is used to produce both the historic first wine in addition to a second wine, Duluc de Branaire-Ducru. These are reds that are perfect for aging, opening up with time in bottle and offering superb freshness and purity.
