Château Branaire-Ducru is a 4ème Cru Classé estate situated on the opposite side of the road from Château Beychevelle in the south of the St-Julien appellation. From the supremely underrated 2006 vintage, this is not a blockbuster wine in the mould of the 2000, 2003 or 2005, rather it is a nicely-defined, elegant and aromatically complex release that is perfect for nearer-term drinking.

Ruby-red. Brooding nose offers dark plum, blueberry, menthol and violet aromas. Fresh and clean in the mouth, showing dense flavors of cassis, black cherry and black pepper that persist nicely. Finishes chewy and persistent, with slightly chunky tannins, a building chocolatey nuance and very good freshness. Still young, but less exotic and chocolatey than some other vintages of Branaire-Ducru. I also don't think the tannins are as refined as those of more recent vintages.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index`s annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Branaire-Ducru has a lifted forest floor, minty bouquet that needs to show more fruit intensity. It just lacks a little conviction. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, a little rustic compared to its peers with a grainy, quite savory finish that needs more depth. This is drinking perfectly now and I would not leave it more than several years. Tasted January 2016. - Neal Martin

Elegant, Complex and Balance

Founded in 1680 by Jean-Baptiste Braneyre, 4ème Cru Classé estate Château Branaire Ducru currently spans 60ha and is situated on the opposite side of the road from Château Beychevelle in the south of the St-Julien appellation. Renowned for producing pure and classic St-Julien, which is elegant, supple and well-balanced.

The estate is planted with predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, together with smaller amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and is used to produce both the historic first wine in addition to a second wine, Duluc de Branaire-Ducru. These are reds that are perfect for aging, opening up with time in bottle and offering superb freshness and purity.
