Château Branaire-Ducru is a 4ème Cru Classé estate situated on the opposite side of the road from Château Beychevelle in the south of the St-Julien appellation. The 1989 vintage was described by Robert Parker`s Wine Advocate as follows, ` This flashy wine exhibits sweet raspberry and black currant fruit intermixed with some lead pencil, cedar, chocolate, and new oak. The wine is medium-bodied, supple-textured, and luscious.`

The 1989 Branaire-Ducru appears youthful, not unlike the 1982 served alongside. There is plenty of perfumed blackberry, black olive and burnt toast scents, with time potent undergrowth aromas join the chorus line. The palate is medium-bodied with mellow tannin, rounded in the mouth thanks to the slightly lower acidity. It is just missing the complexity of the 1989 on the second half and regrettably runs out of ideas about two-thirds of the way through. Whilst not as good as recent vintages this would still be worth checking out. Tasted at the Branaire-Ducru dinner. Neal Martin1st March 2020

Elegant, Complex and Balance

Founded in 1680 by Jean-Baptiste Braneyre, 4ème Cru Classé estate Château Branaire Ducru currently spans 60ha and is situated on the opposite side of the road from Château Beychevelle in the south of the St-Julien appellation. Renowned for producing pure and classic St-Julien, which is elegant, supple and well-balanced.

The estate is planted with predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, together with smaller amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and is used to produce both the historic first wine in addition to a second wine, Duluc de Branaire-Ducru. These are reds that are perfect for aging, opening up with time in bottle and offering superb freshness and purity.
