Based in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Robert Groffier is well-known for having some of the most desirable sites in the Côte de Nuits. Groffier has been an early adopter of sustainable viticulture, and the use of herbicides has been forbidden since 2005. The domaine’s Bonnes-Mares is typically made entirely with whole bunches and matured in one-third new oak. Despite a growing season cooler than usual, France experienced an exceptional year, yielding legendary wines from Bordeaux, Sauternes, and the Rhône Valley, as well as outstanding wines from Burgundy, Beaujolais, Loire, and Alsace.

Good full red. Very subdued nose hints at redcurrant, spicy herbs and underbrush. Highly concentrated but youthfully tight, with a lightly saline quality to the complex flavors of blueberry, wild herbs, sandalwood and mocha. Just this side of thick but its superb balance of sweetness and acidity keeps it vibrant in the mouth. The long, ripely tannic finish features an exhilarating salty minerality. I may be underrating this.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2013

Rich yet vibrant. Dry, dry tannins though the wine is not drying, it is just highly structured even though the tannins are fine grained. Like a lean runner with strength at the core but no soft edges until the perfumed aftertaste. (JH)Julia Harding11th January 2012
