One from a new generation of successful négociants, Olivier Bernstein began making wines in Burgundy in 20007 from a total of ten Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. Bernstein’s Bonnes Mares Grand Cru comes from two parcels of 50+ year-old vines on the Chambolle side of the cru. The 2017 vintage offers an ethereal nose composed of black cherries, blackcurrants, rose petals and charred oak. On the palate, there is an elegant balance, matched by silky tannins and an impressive length.

On the Chambolle side below de Vogüé. 100% new oak. Barrel sample – already racked from barrel to barrel. Scented: red fruits, just-ripe red cherries. Well structured, as much by the acidity as by the tannins, which are really quite delicate. Just a touch of smoky oak spice but the fruit sings. Builds to a more chewy finish and all in embryo but surprisingly approachable. (JH)Julia Harding3rd December 2018
