The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier comes from a narrow 0.36ha plot with vines planted as far back as 1961. Annual production is between 900 and 1500 bottles and has resulted in being an exceptionally highly sought-after wine. The 2016 is full-bodied, dense and complex with a rich and exuberant core of fruit and a beautifully long, focussed finish.

Aromas of sweet red berries, cherries and grilled meats mingle with nuances of spices, dark chocolate and peony in a complex bouquet, introducing the 2016 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, a full-bodied, dense and layered wine that's broad-shouldered, rich and dramatic, with a deep, succulent core of fruit and a long, precise finish. It was wide open when I tasted it, and it will be fascinating to compare with the 2015 and 2016 renditions of Mugnier's Bonnes Mares in a few years time to see if the latter remains more extravagant than the former.William Kelley4th January 2019

The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, the only vineyard not affected by frost, is showing some reduction on the nose, but even so, it is missing the same fruit intensity as some of Mugnier’s other 2016s. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, moderate weight, lightly spiced on the entry with a more structured finish that will need a little time to absorb the oak. That said, it does not have the sophistication of the Les Amoureuses. Tasted at the Domaine. Neal Martin1st October 2019

Precision and Beauty

Located the famous Château de Chambolle-Musigny, which has been owned by the Mugniers since the mid 19th century, Frédéric Mugnier took the hem at the family winery in 1985. Frédéric farms around 35 acres of vines, including plantings in some of Burgundy's most desirable crus, most notably the famous Les Amoureuses Premier Cru and Musigny Grand Cru. A notable recent addition to the portfolio is Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-St-George, returned to the family stable after a 54 lease to Domaine Faiveley.

The winemaking is methodical and reasoned, reflecting Frédéric's training as an engineer - all fruit is destemmed before crushing, new oak is limited to 25% and all wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bucking the trend somewhat, Frédéric has decided not to pursue organic or biodynamic certification. While pesticide and herbicide-free since the mid-1990s, the domaine take a pragmatic approach to vineyard management rather than a dogmatic one.
