Mugnier Bonnes-Mares 2006 is a full-bodied Burgundy red wine from the Grand Cru climat of Bonnes-Mares in the Chambolle-Musigny appellation of the Côte de Nuits. The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier comes from a narrow 0.36ha plot with vines planted as far back as 1961. Annual production is between 900 and 1500 bottles and has resulted in being an exceptionally highly sought-after wine. "Here the nose actually quite resembles that of the Fuées though the fruit spectrum is slightly more deeply pitched and runs slightly more toward the bluer end with just the barest trace of herbal while sliding gracefully into powerful and impressively broad-scaled flavours that are rich, full, sweet and textured, underpinned by ample minerality on the focused, detailed and solidly long finish. Mugnier agreed with me that this vineyard appears to be hitting its stride as of late and while not quite as good as he would like to see, certainly better than it was only a few years ago." (from a blend of 60% white and 40% red soil, says Mugnier) Bright, medium red. Perfumed nose of blueberry, mocha and crushed stone. Plush on entry, then wonderfully fresh in the middle and less plump than the Fuees, with terrific stony verve and mineral intensity to the crushed black fruit flavors. Very broad on the back end. This will rely more on its serious tannins than on its acids for longevity-and it will require at least 10 to 12 years of cellaring.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2009

Precision and Beauty

Located the famous Château de Chambolle-Musigny, which has been owned by the Mugniers since the mid 19th century, Frédéric Mugnier took the hem at the family winery in 1985. Frédéric farms around 35 acres of vines, including plantings in some of Burgundy's most desirable crus, most notably the famous Les Amoureuses Premier Cru and Musigny Grand Cru. A notable recent addition to the portfolio is Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-St-George, returned to the family stable after a 54 lease to Domaine Faiveley.

The winemaking is methodical and reasoned, reflecting Frédéric's training as an engineer - all fruit is destemmed before crushing, new oak is limited to 25% and all wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bucking the trend somewhat, Frédéric has decided not to pursue organic or biodynamic certification. While pesticide and herbicide-free since the mid-1990s, the domaine take a pragmatic approach to vineyard management rather than a dogmatic one.
