Henri Boillot is a domaine that has built a solid reputation for the sheer quality of their Burgundy wines, exemplified by this 2017 Bonnes Mares Gran Cru. The wine offers an incredibly complex aroma profile, including red cherries, blackberries, along with notes of violets, peonies and lavender. The palate is full-bodied, with ripe tannins and subtle salinity, finishing with an aftertaste with just the right acidity. Structured for long-term cellaring, the wine will evolve for decades to come.
Vinous
The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru offers dark cherries, blackberry and light touches of blue fruit in what is a very similar bouquet to the domaine’s other Grand Crus. The palate is full-bodied with ripe tannins, perhaps showing a little more terroir expression than the other Grand Crus, with touches of white pepper and sage towards the structured finish. This is probably the best of Boillot’s Grand Crus. Neal Martin1st January 2019

Father and Son

In some ways, Henri Boillot has one foot in the past and one in the present. His family domaine, which he manages with his son Guillaume, has a history dating back to the 1880s, but the wines produced from their Meursault-based winery are undeniably modern, approachable and ranked among some of the very best in the region. Alongside operating a highly successful négociant business, the Boillot family own around 14 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Beaune including a Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru monopole in the form of Clos de la Mouchère.

The winery don't shy away from the use of new oak and any overtly woody character is generally well balanced by ripe fruit. The Chardonnays range from citrus driven and fresher at the villages level all the way to ripe, tropical and creamy at the Grand Cru level. The reds are lighter and more elegant than they used to be with Henri's son Guillaume preferring a less extracted style of Pinot Noir.
