Bonnes-Mares 1998 from Domaine de Vogüé is a Grand Cru red Burgundy that uses Pinot Noir sourced from the estate’s parcels situated on the lighter, whiter soils of the vineyard. This specific terroir, known as terres blanches, typically imparts a more floral and ethereal character compared with the heavier clay sections of the site. The 1998 vintage was marked by a hot August and a challenging harvest, resulting in wines with firm tannins and significant phenolic concentration. The profile now reveals tertiary notes of leather, damp earth and dried cherries. Its structure remains formidable, showing the characteristic power of the site while the acidity provides a lifting freshness that ensures balance.

Full deep red. Very precise aromas of black plum, blueberry, licorice and herbs. Quite powerful on the attack, with penetrating but cool black fruit flavors, then unforthcoming in the middle. The spicy, dark berry flavors return with a vengeance on the finish. Strong tannins will require up to a decade of bottle aging.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2001
