Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2023 is a premium red wine produced in the Franschhoek valley, with fruit primarily sourced from the schistous soils of Swartland. This vintage continues the estate’s move towards a more northern Rhône-inspired style, utilising whole-bunch fermentation and maturation in traditional large French oak foudres and seasoned barriques. The 2023 growing season yielded berries with intense aromatics and a vibrant structural profile, maintaining freshness despite the South African sun. It delivers a complex bouquet of crushed black peppercorns, violets and cured meat, accompanied by a core of dark plum and olive tapenade. This wine represents a pinnacle of South African Syrah, focusing on site expression and textural elegance rather than over-extracted power or high alcohol levels.

The 2023 Syrah comes from Swartland as usual, 60% whole bunch and aged for 18 months, 90% in Stockinger foudres and the rest in demi-muids. This has a perfumed nose with blueberry and black cherry scents, touches of pressed violet and peony emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Lovely balance, a tad more savoury than previous vintages with a ferrous/dried blood finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine. Neal Martin2nd October 2025
