The 2022 Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is a full-bodied red wine from the Swartland region, sourced from the producer`s two farms near Riebeek-Kasteel. Porseleinberg contributes approximately 90% of the grapes from its decomposed mica-schist soils; Goldmine contributes about 10% from brown schist and Table Mountain sandstone soils. Fermented using a high proportion of whole bunches, the wine is aged for up to 18 months in large 2,500L Austrian oak foudres and 600L demi-muids. The resulting wine is elegant and perfumed, with upfront notes of dark fruits, liquorice, cured venison and baking spice, balanced by sculpted tannins and a lively acidity on the palate.

The Boekenhoutskloof 2022 Swartland Syrah sees 60% whole-bunch fruit and the rest is destemmed. It ages in Stockinger foudre for 18 months. Syrah is planted on a cool slope, and this wine exhibits upright aromas with purple and blue fruits backed by bright primary intensity. It caresses the palate with a polished and gentle style but does not lack power or depth. A long and slow malolactic fermentation is allowed, thus giving more tension to the wine. Swartland Syrah tends to flesh out and get richer with time. Give this bottle a few years in the cellar.

The 2022 Syrah contains two-thirds whole bunches. It underwent natural fermentation in concrete vats, with 90% matured in 2,500-liter Stockinger foudres and 10% in Stockinger demi-muids for 18 months. This has a clean and precise bouquet with mainly red berry fruit, lightly spiced, hints of potpourri and garrigue percolating through with aeration. The palate is very elegant in style with finely chiseled tannins, quite tensile and energetic, closing with a peppery finish that doesn't outstay its welcome. It boasts a wonderful, slightly chalky texture. This is very well crafted and should age with style. Neal Martin1st September 2024

A combination of partially destemmed and whole-bunch (65%) clusters were cooled and fermented in tulip-shaped concrete tanks. After fermentation, the grapes were basket-pressed and gravity-fed into 2,500-litre Austrian oak (they only use Stockinger barrels for this wine) foudres and 600-litre demi-muids, where the wine was matured for up to 18 months. RS 2.39 g/l, TA 5.06 g/l, pH 3.94.Deep, bluish ruby. It`s a bit green on the nose – I wonder if the stems included were fully ripe? Brambly dark fruit, balsamic, some black pepper. Fresh on the palate, with fine tannins, though the alcohol juts out a bit. A touch too green for me, but perhaps it just isn`t fully integrated yet. (JRL)
