Boekenhoutskloof Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is a signature red from the Boekenhoutskloof estate, sourced from four specific parcels on the north-facing slopes of the Franschhoek mountains. This 2023 bottling showcases a distinct regional character, more delicate and herbal than its Stellenbosch counterparts, with notes of cassis, lead pencil and fynbos. The soils, composed of decomposed granite and sandstone, provide a fine-grained tannic structure and a refreshing acidity. Winemaking includes maturation in 100% new French oak, yet the intensity of the fruit ensures a seamless integration. It is an elegant and classically proportioned Cabernet, offering a sophisticated mineral core and a persistent finish that reflects the unique maritime-influenced terroir of the Franschhoek valley.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Franschhoek contains slightly more Cabernet Franc in the blend, with more new French oak (80%). This has quite a striking menthol-tinged bouquet that slightly obscures the fruit profile (winemaker Gottfried Mocke puts this down to the Cabernet Franc). The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe tannins, a little medicinal in style, fleshy with a bright, almost Syrah-like finish. Give it 12 to 18 months in bottle. Neal Martin2nd October 2025
