Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 2005 is a mature-vintage white Burgundy from the Grand Cru climat of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune. Now led by Brice de la Morandière – the great grandson of Joseph Leflaive – Domaine Leflaive is one of the most influential estates in Puligny-Montrachet. Leflaive focuses almost entirely on white wines made from Chardonnay, including four Grand Cru and four Premier Cru expressions. This particular release hails from Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, where the Domaine owns a 1.16-hectare plot. "Humidity caused some viral problems in the vineyards, including some corte noue. Very closed on the nose, but with some coaxing that limestone and granite scent comes forth, then some apple-blossom and a touch of gun smoke. The palate of powerful and citrus-like with a touch of honeysuckle, tending towards a slightly unctuous, spicy finish. A gregarious wine with great breeding and verve." Wine Advocate, 2007

The 2005 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru came from an original bottle, i.e., not reconditioned at the Domaine due to premox problems. It has a rich and concentrated bouquet, with hints of wild honey intermixed with white flowers and broom. It shows a wonderful definition, a hint of candy floss emerging with aeration. The palate is very well-balanced with great poise, a silver thread of acidity and a dash of white pepper and crustacea towards the sustained finish. Outstanding. Tasted at Clarette in London.

The pinnacle of Puligny-Montrachet

Founded in the 18th century, Domaine Leflaive has built a storied reputation for its commitment to biodynamic farming and exceptional craftsmanship. The estate owns 22 hectares of vineyards, including 10 hectares of Premiers Crus in Puligny-Montrachet (Les Combettes, Les Pucelles, Le Clavoillon, Les Folatières), as well as no fewer than 5 hectares of Grands Crus (Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and a tiny holding in Le Montrachet).

Joseph Leflaive, whose vision and dedication in the early 20th century were pivotal, transformed the domaine into a symbol of excellence. In the 1990s, Anne-Claude Leflaive introduced biodynamic practices, adhering to rigorous standards that respect the natural rhythms of the earth, promoting soil health and vine vitality without synthetic chemicals. This holistic approach results in Chardonnay wines celebrated for their purity, depth, and complexity. Each bottle reflects the rich heritage and innovative spirit that have made Domaine Leflaive a revered name among wine enthusiasts.
