Beychevelle 2010 is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the Fourth Growth Château Beychevelle in St-Julien. Always one of the more approachable wines of the appellation, Beychevelle has enjoyed a consistent run of good to excellent vintages in recent years. The 2010 is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. "Showing better from bottle than it did from barrel, where it was also impressive, but not quite at this level, the 2010 Beychevelle displays sweet black currant, black cherry, foresty notes, medium to full-bodied texture with impressive purity and moderately high tannins (although they`ve softened considerably during the wines upbringing in barrel). Layered and rich for a Beychevelle, this wine should easily withstand three decades of cellaring. I would give it another 3-4 years of bottle age, but this is a fabulous effort from the first chateau one sees upon entering the appellation of St.-Julien." Robert Parker, 2013

The 2010 Beychevelle has much more lift and black fruit on the nose compared directly with the 2009. Licorice and violet scents, especially the former, emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly spiced entry. Huge structure, dense and tannic, powerful with an almost burly finish. You might argue that this lacks a bit of finesse, but it has a sense of audacity uncommon in this Saint-Julien. Tasted at the Beychevelle vertical at the property.

Inviting, savoury dark fruit. Wonderfully juicy in the middle of all that tannin structure. Chewy and dense and then a chocolate sweetness at the very end. (JH)
