Château Beychevelle 1985 is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend from the Saint-Julien appellation on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. This wine benefits from the estate’s proximity to the Gironde estuary, which moderates temperatures and provides deep gravelly soils ideal for drainage and heat retention. The 1985 vintage is celebrated for its elegance and approachability, moving away from the more austere structures of the early 1980s. Winemaking involves traditional fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel followed by ageing for 18 months in French oak barrels. The palate reveals a supple texture with integrated tannins, showing mature notes of cedar, tobacco and dried blackcurrants. It represents a classic expression of the Beychevelle style, balancing aromatic richness with a refined, medium-bodied frame.

- This was my first encounter with the 1985 Beychevelle. To be honest, it's not a golden period for this Saint-Julien. It has a strange nose, some Brettanomyces plus the wood component which seems disjointed to what little fruit there is. The palate is quite candied on the entry, a feral Beychevelle with a Rhône-like, slightly caramelly finish. Disappointing in the context of the vintage.

A Classic Saint Julien Classed Growth
Reflecting the elegance and finesse of Saint Julien's finest terroirs, fourth growth Château Beychevelle spans 90ha and is renowned for its graceful and complex first wine, made from the best plots in the vineyard and that boasts a wonderful capacity for aging.
A second wine, Amiral de Beychevelle, is also made from young vines. The estate is planted to predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, together with smaller percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Expect supple, balanced wines with tremendous aromatic richness.
