During the 1990s, Beringer were consistently producing some of the finest Cabernets in California. The 1996 Private Reserve is powerful and full-bodied with tremendous levels of extraction. It exhibits rich, chocolatey and liquorice-scented black fruits, thick glycerol texture and a superbly long finish.

Vinous
(14.5% alcohol; 5% Chabot, 21% State Lane, 14% St. Helena, 57% Bancroft and 3% Cabernet Franc): Good full, dark red. Red berries, menthol and mint on the nose, plus a slightly evolved balsamic note; clearly less ripe than the 1991 bottling. Supple, sweet and easygoing, offering flavors of red berries and plum jam. Fat and attractive but without the spine of the most important vintages. Finishes plush and persistent, with dusty tannins.Stephen Tanzer1st July 2015
