Château Bélair-Monange was created from the fusion of the historic Saint-Émilion vineyards of Châteaux Bélair and Magdelaine. The 2016 opens extravagantly with aromas of warm black fruits, cigar box, lavender and bay leaf. It is mouthfilling and rich on the palate with gloriously vibrant fruit, a firm spine of tannin and thrilling freshness. Drink 2022-2055.

The 2016 Belair-Monangé displays almost clinical precision on a nose of mineral-rich black cherry and raspberry fruit, plus hints of wilted violets and iris. The medium-bodied palate delivers firm grip on the entry. This is a clean, precise, correct Saint-Émilion with plenty of tension and poise toward the persistent finish. Very classy and noble. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Neal Martin1st August 2020

This was not tasted during the Connoisseur Week, but is a request from a subscriber, so I am adding in at the same time from opening a bottle that I have at home. It's an exceptional wine, still a little austere at this point, with everything in place to deliver joy over the next two to three decades. The salt twist of the limestone-dominant soils is on full display, alongside crushed raspberries and blackberries, cocoa bean, liqourice root, chamomile flowers and pomegranate, opening to show creamy cappuccino. This was the point that everything was starting to come together for Belair-Monange under the Moueix ownership.Jane Anson12th June 2025
