Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Clos de la Mousse 2022 is a full-bodied Burgundy red wine from the Premier Cru of Clos de la Mousse in the Côte de Beaune. Owned by the Henriot family since 1995, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of France’s oldest wine estates with a history that spans nearly three centuries. It is also one of the largest landowners in Burgundy, with vineyard holdings totalling approximately 130 hectares. Clos de la Mousse has been the monopoly of Bouchard Père & Fils since 1872. The appellation produces a single red wine with fruity aromas, combined with light toasty notes on the nose. The palate is fleshy, but also refined and delicate.

The 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse offers up aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy palate that`s chunky and youthfully structured, in keeping with this clay-rich soil that reliably produces seriously age-worthy, albeit less polished, wines.

Vinous
The 2022 Beaune Clos de la Mousse 1er Cru comes from more clayey soils that obviate hydric stress. Very floral on the nose, I appreciate the purity of fruit: lovely red cherries and crushed strawberries, more Pinoté than the Les Teurons. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite sweet and a little confit-like but with fine structure towards the finish. It just needs a couple of years to absorb the new oak. Very fine.

Timeless legacy in Burgundy’s heart

Established in 1731, Maison Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest and largest wine estates in the Côte d’Or. In 1995, the estate was acquired by the Henriot family, whose portfolio also includes William Fèvre, Beaux Frères, Château de Poncié and Champagne Henriot. Bouchard boasts vineyard holdings totalling approximately 130 hectares, including 74ha of Premiers Crus and 12ha of Grand Crus, with as many as 450 different individual plots. While the maison’s vast mosaic of holdings are weighted towards the Côte de Beaune, the Côte de Nuits is also a major focus.

The maison’s original vineyard was purchased by Joseph Bouchard in Volnay Les Caillerets in 1775. Not long after Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jesus followed. Now one of four Bouchard monopole vineyards, Beaune Grèves Vignes de l’Enfant Jésus was once owned by the Carmelite order of nuns and is the source of Bouchard’s flagship wine. Bouchard’s extensive suite of wines is produced and aged at the state-of-the-art, gravity-fed Cuverie Saint Vincent in Savigny-lès-Beaune. Once bottled, the wines are stored beneath the historic Château de Beaune, built in the 15th century by King Louis XI and purchased by Bernard Bouchard in 1820.

With almost 300 years of savoir-faire, from its unrivalled multiplicity of terroirs, Bouchard stands as one of the most eminent names in Burgundy winemaking.
